    What UPC-E is

UPC-E is a UPC-A with some of its zeros left out, so it takes about half the width. Only UPC-A numbers with enough zeros in the right places can be written as UPC-E, which is why it is mostly used for small items by companies with short GS1 prefixes.

A UPC-E code has 8 digits: the number system (0 or 1), six data digits and a check digit. The check digit is calculated from the full UPC-A number it stands for.

    How to enter UPC-E numbers

    • 6 digits, such as 123456: number system 0 is assumed and the check digit is added.
    • 7 digits, such as 0123456: number system plus the six digits; the check digit is added.
    • 8 digits: the full code; the check digit is verified.

Add a Tab or comma and the product name to print it under the barcode. If you have the UPC-A number instead, use the UPC-A generator.

Can every UPC-A be printed as UPC-E?

No. Only UPC-A numbers with number system 0 or 1 and a run of zeros in specific positions can be compressed. If your number can't, use UPC-A.

How do I know which UPC-A my UPC-E stands for?

It is expanded by a fixed rule based on the sixth digit. Scanners expand it automatically, so your point-of-sale system sees the full UPC-A.

    Do I need a GS1 prefix for UPC-E?

For products sold in stores, yes. UPC-E numbers come from GS1 company prefixes the same way UPC-A numbers do.
