    What Codabar is used for

Codabar is an older barcode that holds digits and the symbols - $ : / . +, between a start and a stop letter from A to D. It is still common in libraries, where items and patron cards often carry 14-digit Codabar numbers, and in blood banks and some labs.

If your system already has a number format, use it exactly. Some library systems include a check digit in the number; it is printed as part of the code.

How to print library barcode labels

    1. Paste your item numbers, or make a run on the Sequence tab, for example starting at 31234000010431 with 14 digits and no prefix.
    2. Keep Codabar selected. To use other start and stop letters, write them yourself, such as B31234000010431B.
    3. Choose a label sheet such as Avery 5160, add text like the library name after a Tab or comma, and download the PDF.

Does Codabar need start and stop characters?

Yes, every Codabar barcode begins and ends with A, B, C or D. If you enter only digits, A is used at both ends.

    Can Codabar contain letters?

Only the start and stop letters A to D. For codes with letters, use Code 39 or Code 128.

Is Codabar the same as NW-7?

Yes. NW-7, USD-4, Code 2 of 7 and Ames Code are other names for Codabar.
