    Why Data Matrix

    Data Matrix is a square 2D code like a QR code, but it stays readable at a much smaller size. That is why it is used on circuit boards, electronic components, medical devices, small parts and tool marking, where a QR code or a 1D barcode will not fit.

    It holds letters, digits and punctuation, and has strong error correction, so it still scans when part of it is scratched. Most phone cameras and 2D barcode scanners read it. Older laser scanners only read 1D barcodes such as Code 128.

    How to make Data Matrix codes in bulk

    1. Paste one serial number or value per line, with an optional label after a Tab or comma.
    2. The sheet is set to A4 65 per sheet (38×21 mm), small labels that suit Data Matrix well.
    3. Download the PDF, or a ZIP with an SVG file per code for engraving or packaging artwork.

    What is the difference between Data Matrix and QR code?

    Both are 2D codes. Data Matrix is more compact for short data and is the standard in industry and healthcare. QR codes are better known to the public and are usually used for links.

    How small can a Data Matrix code be?

    A code with a short serial number can be printed at around 5–10 mm square on a good printer. Test with your own scanner before printing a large batch.

    Is this GS1 DataMatrix?

    It makes standard Data Matrix (ECC 200). GS1 DataMatrix adds a special start character and application identifiers, which this tool does not add.
