    When to use Code 39

Code 39, also called Code 3 of 9, is one of the oldest barcode types and is still required by many automotive, defence and healthcare systems, ID badges and older warehouse software. It encodes upper-case letters A–Z, digits 0–9 and the characters - . $ / + % and space.

It is wider than Code 128 for the same text, so if your system accepts both, Code 128 gives a shorter barcode that fits smaller labels.

How to make Code 39 barcodes in bulk

    1. Paste one value per line, in capital letters. Add a Tab or comma and a description to print it under the barcode.
    2. Keep Code 39 selected. Values with lower-case letters or unsupported characters are listed in red so you can fix them.
    3. Pick a label sheet or thermal roll and download the PDF, or a ZIP of PNG or SVG files.

Can Code 39 contain lower-case letters?

Standard Code 39 only has capital letters, digits and a few symbols. Convert your values to upper case, or use Code 128, which supports lower case.

Does Code 39 need a check digit?

No. The check digit is optional in Code 39 and most systems do not use one, so none is added.

Do I need to add the asterisks?

No. The * start and stop characters are added to the barcode automatically. Enter only your value.
