How an ISBN becomes a barcode

A book barcode is an EAN-13 whose number is the 13-digit ISBN, starting with 978 or 979 ("Bookland"). An older 10-digit ISBN is converted: 978 is put in front, its last digit is dropped and a new check digit is calculated.

ISBNs are assigned by the ISBN agency for your country, for example Bowker in the US or Nielsen in the UK. The barcode itself can be made by anyone once you have the number.

How to make ISBN barcodes in bulk

    1. Paste one ISBN per line, such as 978-1-23456-101-7, 9781234561017 or a 10-digit ISBN. Add a Tab or comma and the title to print it too.
    2. Keep ISBN selected. Wrong check digits are flagged.
    3. Choose a label size for stickers, or download SVG files to place on a cover design.

Does this add the price add-on (EAN-5)?

No. Some US booksellers expect a 5-digit add-on after the main barcode, such as 90000 for no suggested price. If you need it, check your distributor's requirements and add it in your cover software.

    Can I use an ISBN-10?

Yes. ISBN-10s are converted to the 978 EAN-13 automatically, and their check digit is verified first.

What size should a book barcode be?

Retailers usually expect it at or near the standard EAN-13 size of about 37 × 26 mm, printed in black on white. Ask your printer or distributor for their minimum.
