    How barcode numbers are built

An EAN-13 number has three parts: your GS1 company prefix, an item reference that you choose for each product, and a check digit calculated from the other twelve. The longer your prefix, the fewer item numbers it leaves: a 7-digit prefix gives 100,000 EAN-13 numbers, a 10-digit prefix gives 100.

For UPC-A, enter your GS1 US prefix without its leading 0. For GTIN-14 (cartons), put the packaging indicator digit, 1 to 8, in front of the prefix.

How to generate and print them

    1. On the Sequence tab, choose the number type, enter your prefix, the first item number and how many you need.
    2. Click Fill the list. The numbers appear in the list with their check digits, and the barcode type is set to match.
    3. Add product names after a Tab if you like, pick a label sheet and download the PDF, or copy the numbers into your product catalogue.

Keep a record of which number you gave to which product, and never reuse a number for a different product.

Can I make up my own EAN or UPC numbers?

Not for products sold through retailers or marketplaces. Those numbers must come from a GS1 company prefix licensed to you. For internal use only, EAN-13 numbers starting with 200–299 are reserved for in-store use.

    Is 0614141 my prefix?

No. 0614141 is an example prefix used in GS1 documentation. Replace it with your own before using the numbers.

How is the check digit calculated?

Starting from the right, digits are multiplied by 3 and 1 alternately and added up. The check digit is what brings the total to the next multiple of 10.
